Sixteen years in the making.

May 2, 2019

So, I'm back blogging after a short break for Easter. I just wanted to take some time to focus on my family, and spend some quality chocolate egg munching with my kids. It's been a lot of fun, and I've had a really great time, but now it's time to get back to normal and I kicked things off with a bang.

Anyone who follows me on social media will know that I recently returned to the director's chair for a new short film. Well, this short is something of a big deal for me, and not just because it's arguably the most ambitious short I've ever made.

It's called The Body, and I wrote it nearly sixteen years ago.

Obviously it's grown and changed since its original inception, but the central premise and the characters have remained largely unchained throughout the years. It's been something I've been wanting to do ever since I first wrote it, but the road from script to screen has been a long and complicated one.

The Body tells the story of Alison, who hatches a plan to kill her husband and bury him in the woods, a plan that proves more difficult than she original expected, especially when the body just keeps coming back.

When I first wrote it the idea was that it could be part of an anthology, but the more I thought about it the more the concept intrigued me. I expanded upon it, trying to see if it would work as a feature, but always struggled to find enough to really fill a full features worth of ideas, so instead I returned to the short format.

But still something felt off, and every time I tried to get it made there would be some kind of issue.

I actually managed to shoot the first five minutes or so several years back, only for filming to fall apart soon after and the project was never completed.

But now I've done it. The thing has been filmed and it's currently in the edit. A lot of changes have been made to the script over the years, and I finally feel like it's in a place where it's worth making, but despite those changes, like I said already, the central concept and ideas have remained the same throughout.

I'm quite excited for this one. Unlike any other short I've ever made The Body was shot over several days and required multiple locations. There's also some incredible effects make-up by the extremely talented Bethany "Beats" Smith, which is always something I can't wait to show off.

I'm hoping a rough edit will be finished soon and then we'll be on to the sound and grading before, ultimately, entering it into some festivals.

So, keep your eyes peeled for further updates on this one. Literally sixteen years in the making, The Body will be coming soon.
